INTRODUCTION
Emperor Meiji in 1885 – described Japan’s need to be a leading power in Asia and to behave “in the same way as the civilized countries of the West are doing.” With the industrial growth after Meiji’s revolution in Japan, its imperialist ambitions also increased. But, these were primarily limited to its neighbors.
BODY
It should be noted that militarily, Japan benefited not only from its rapid industrialization but also by being an island nation, and by having a neighboring military rival a crippled power – China, also Japan had an advantage over Europe and the US regarding Asia by being geographically closer to targets of imperial interest.
Japan got modernized after few it attained capitalist power, Japan started to have colonial ambitions by series of events as follows-
- Attacked China and annexed Formosa in 1895.
- Japan defeated Russia in 1904-1905 and made her accept Japanese Sphere of influence in Manchuria.
- Korea was annexed in 1910
Some of the most prominent effects of the Japanese imperialism at the end of 19th century, were as follows-
- Change in Balance of Power in Asia- with the control of Manchuria, the balance of power shifted from Russia to Japan.
- Conflict with Asian countries.
- Boosting the Nationalist movement growth- It set an example for countries such as India to fight against the European powers.
- Dismissing of Racial Superiority- Due to Japan’s victory it reduced the stigma of lower Asian race over European race.
- Fueling World wars.
Territorial effects –
- Korea
- It led to enslaving the country and splitting of country into two – Dictatorial North and Democratic South
- It deteriorated Korean culture and forcing them to adopt Japanese culture, language and religion
- China
- Imperialist efforts led to Nanking massacre
- It led to the onset of Sino Japanese War.
- For Asian countries
- It showed that Asian countries could achieve power.
- Reduction of European race superiority.
- For the World
- Emergence of a new contender for Imperialist landscape.
- Showed about the character of Imperialism, remains same irrespective whether it is European or Asian power.
- Boost to National Movement in various countries.
- Tension between USA and Japan increased substantially.
Effects on Japanese –
- Suffered economically and allowed for destruction of Japanese Infrastructure.
- Japan attacked Pearl harbor and it lead to the bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- Subsequent decline of European markets and rise of Japanese markets.
- Rapid Industrialization in future – Capitalist became self-sufficient and emerged as industrial giants.
However, due to huge loss of men and material in World Wars and the horrifying effects of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki- Japan changed to Pacifist policies in the years to come, e.g.- Article 9 of Japanese Constitution- It is a clause in the national Constitution of Japan outlawing war as a means to settle international disputes involving the state, Japan is one of the strongest promoters to Denuclearize in the world.
CONCLUSION
Hence, it showed that Imperialism was not limited to specific people or region but, it was the result of greed for economic and political power, which could distort the policies of any country irrespective of race or cultural claims. However, Japan Rose, fell and again rose it shows the resolve of the Nation and its character and again setting an example to the world.
