Introduction:
A voice assistant is a digital assistant that uses voice recognition, speech synthesis, and natural language processing (NLP) to provide a service through a particular application. Example: Siri, Google Assistant and Cortona.
Body:
In general voice assistants react to voice commands and give the user relevant information about his inquiry. Presently voice assistants are already able to process orders of products, answer questions, perform actions like playing music or start a simple phone call with a friend.
Working: Smart speakers – The connecting link in voice assistant communication
- These have a microphone to “hear” and speakers to communicate back to us. The smart part is their direct connection to the internet and advanced speech recognition software.
- The software can understand and react to specific commands.
- The assistant will decipher the human voice command and then act independently by searching the web for the right answer and reading it back to the user.
The smart speaker itself is only the physical part of the smart assistant, the connecting device between bits and bytes and our human needs and demands.
About UMANG:
The term UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. It was launched to promote Digital India program and to drive mobile e-governance in India. The app was developed by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and National e-Governance Division (NeGD)
The app provides unified approach where one application to avail multiple government services. It is single mobile app that has access to 1200 services of various government offices from Centre, State and utility services. It supports 13 Indian languages and caters to on-demand scalability. It provides all pan India e-Governance services like Aadhaar, PAN, booking gas cylinder, PF account and Digi-locker on one single platform.
Government is planning an AI voice assistant in regional languages via UMANG app.

Significance of UMANG app lies in helping to overcome language barrier, technology enabled service delivery, greater reach to masses and promoting spirit of digital India.
